San Pellegrino Pass
The San Pellegrino Pass (1918 m) is a high mountain pass in the Italian Dolomites. It connects the municipalities of Moena and Falcade. The ski resort of Trevalli is located at the pass. The area is also popular in summer for rock climbing. The peak of Cima Uomo and Col Margherita stand nearby on the north and the south sides. During World War I Austrian positions were on Cima Uomo while Italian trenches were on Col Margherita.
San Pellegrino Pass
At 1,918 metres, this pass sits between the Fassa and Biois valleys, linking the towns of Moena and Falcade. In winter it's the base for the Trevalli ski area, and in summer the surrounding rock faces draw climbers. On either side, Cima Uomo and Col Margherita rise above the road; both saw fighting in the First World War, with Austrian positions on Cima Uomo facing Italian trenches on Col Margherita, and some trench remains can still be traced on foot.
Getting there
The pass road connects Moena and Falcade directly, so it's really a matter of driving from whichever valley you're staying in. From Moena, the climb up to the pass takes roughly 20-25 minutes by car; from Falcade it's a similar drive on the other side. There's no train access — a car, or the seasonal mountain bus services that some resorts run, are the practical options.
How long to spend
Passing through on a scenic drive takes only a few minutes, but allow at least half a day if you want to walk part of the WWI trail routes or take a chairlift up toward Col Margherita for the views. A full day suits anyone combining a hike with lunch at one of the mountain huts near the pass.
When to go
Winter weekends bring heavy traffic and full car parks around the ski lifts, so weekday visits are calmer if you're skiing. In summer, mornings are quieter before day-trippers and cyclists arrive — the pass is also a well-known road cycling climb, so expect groups of riders on the ascent, especially on weekends.
