サン・ジョヴァンニ洗礼堂
Florence Baptistery
サン・ジョヴァンニ洗礼堂 は、フィレンツェのサンタ・マリア・デル・フィオーレ大聖堂付属の洗礼堂。大聖堂の正面玄関に向き合って立っている八角形の建築物で、ロマネスク様式の最も重要な集中形式の教会建築のひとつである。アーヘンの宮廷礼拝堂を想起させるが、祭室と壁内通路以外には付室を持たない非常に単純な形式の八角堂である。
Florence Baptistery
This octagonal building facing the cathedral is one of the oldest structures in Florence and the traditional baptismal church of the city, dedicated to John the Baptist. Most visitors come for two things: the exterior bronze doors, including the "Gates of Paradise" panels by Ghiberti (the ones on the building today are replicas, with the originals held in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo nearby), and the interior mosaic ceiling, which is worth the visit on its own.
Getting there
It sits right on Piazza San Giovanni in front of the Duomo, in the pedestrian heart of the historic centre. From most points in central Florence it's a 10-15 minute walk; there's no need for transit unless you're coming from outside the centre, in which case any bus route ending near the Duomo works.
How long to stay
Seeing the exterior doors and walking around the piazza takes about 15-20 minutes. If you go inside to see the ceiling mosaics and the floor, allow 30-45 minutes total.
When to go
The piazza in front of the Baptistery is one of the busiest spots in Florence at almost any hour, especially midday and early afternoon. Early morning tends to be calmer for photos of the doors and facade. Inside, the space is small, so even modest crowds can feel dense.
Combine it with
- Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (0.1km) — see Ghiberti's original door panels and other artworks removed from the cathedral complex.
- Giotto's Campanile (0.1km) — climb for views over the Duomo and Baptistery roof.
- Tomb of Antipope John XXIII — located inside the Baptistery itself, easy to see during the same visit.
All of these sit within the same small piazza, so they're naturally covered in one stop along with Florence Cathedral itself.
