What it is
Florence Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is the city's main church and the dominant structure on its skyline. Construction started in 1296 under Arnolfo di Cambio and finished in 1436, when Filippo Brunelleschi's dome was completed - an engineering feat that still defines the building. The exterior is covered in green, pink, and white marble panels, with a 19th-century Gothic Revival façade added later. Most visitors come to see the exterior and dome up close, and to climb the dome for views over the city; the cathedral museum next door holds original sculptures and artifacts removed from the building over the centuries.
Getting there
The cathedral sits in the historic centre and is reachable on foot from most central hotels within 10-20 minutes. It's a short walk from Piazza della Repubblica or the Ponte Vecchio area. If arriving from the train station, Santa Maria Novella, it's about a 10-minute walk.
Time to allow
Seeing the exterior and stepping into the nave takes roughly 30-45 minutes. Climbing the dome adds another hour or more, including the wait and the climb itself, which involves several hundred narrow steps with no lift.
When to go
The piazza and cathedral entrance get crowded through the middle of the day, especially in high season. Early morning tends to be quieter for photos of the exterior. The dome climb is physically demanding and not well suited to those with mobility issues or a fear of tight, enclosed spaces.
Combine with
Everything of note is within a couple of minutes' walk. Giotto's Campanile (0.1km) offers another climb with different views of the dome itself. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (0.1km) houses original artworks from the cathedral complex, including sculptures once on the façade. The Gates of Paradise (0.1km), the bronze doors of the adjacent Baptistery, are also worth a look - note that the originals are displayed in the museum, with replicas on the Baptistery itself. Piazza del Duomo (0km) ties the whole complex together and is the natural starting point for visiting all of these sites in one outing.
