Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
This museum focuses on modern and contemporary Asian art, with a collection of around three thousand works drawn from twenty-three countries. It's a useful stop for travellers who want to see how art across Asia has developed outside the more familiar Japanese and Western canons, covering painting, sculpture, and other media from across the region.
Getting there
The museum is located in the Hakata district, inside the Riverain complex, close to central Fukuoka. From the city centre it's typically a short taxi or subway ride of around 10-15 minutes, followed by a brief walk. It's also easily reached on foot if you're already exploring the Hakata or Nakasu area.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend around one to two hours here, depending on how much of the collection is on display and whether any special exhibitions are running.
When to go
As an indoor museum, it works well as an option on hot or rainy days. It's generally not known for heavy crowds compared to major outdoor sights, so visiting at a relaxed pace during the day should be comfortable most of the time.
What to combine it with
The museum sits close to several other Hakata-area sights, making it easy to combine into one outing:
- Hakata-za (0.1km) - a theatre right next door, worth checking for performances
- Nakasu (0.3km) - a nearby entertainment and dining district, good for an evening after your visit
- Kushida Shrine (0.5km) - a short walk away, offering a contrasting historical and religious site
- Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art (0.7km) - another art museum nearby, useful if you want to compare collections in the same day
