Gion
기온(일본어: 祇園 기온[*])은 교토부 교토시 히가시야마구에 위치한 유흥가이다. 일본의 센고쿠 시대에 개발됐고, 야사카 신사(기온 신사) 앞에 위치해 있다. 기온은 신사 참배객을 수용하기 위해서 건설됐다. 현재는 일본에서 게이샤로 유명한 동네로 발전했다. 기온이라는 단어는 제타바나(기온정사)와 관련이 있다.
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's best-known geisha district, a compact grid of streets that grew up to serve visitors to Yasaka Shrine. The main appeal is walking the older lanes, particularly Hanamikoji Street and the wooden machiya townhouses along Shirakawa Canal, where teahouses and traditional restaurants still operate. It's a place to look at streetscape and architecture rather than a single sight with an entrance gate.
Getting there
From central Kyoto (Kyoto Station), it's about 15-20 minutes by bus or taxi, or a similar time combining a short train ride with a walk. If arriving from Kansai International Airport (KIX), plan for over an hour to reach the area, including the connection into central Kyoto.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is enough to walk the main streets and canal area at an easy pace. Add more time if you plan to eat at one of the local restaurants or browse shops along the way.
When to go
Early morning or early evening tends to be quieter and better for photos, especially along Shirakawa Canal. Hanamikoji Street and the area near the shrine get busy with tourists during the day, particularly on weekends, and evenings around dusk when people gather hoping to spot geisha or maiko heading to appointments. Be mindful that this is a residential and working district, not a stage set.
