노베첸토 박물관
Museo del Novecento
What it is
The Museo del Novecento is dedicated to 20th-century Italian art, housed in the Palazzo dell'Arengario right on Piazza del Duomo. The collection traces Italian art movements through the century, including a strong showing of Futurism, and the building's upper floors and connecting bridge give direct views over the cathedral's rooftop and spires — a reason to visit in itself for many travellers, alongside the art.
Getting there
Its location on Piazza del Duomo makes it easy to reach on foot from almost anywhere in central Milan; from areas like Brera or the Quadrilatero della Moda it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk. By metro, Duomo station (lines M1 and M3) sits right next to the piazza, putting the museum within a couple of minutes' walk of the exit.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend around 1.5 to 2 hours inside, depending on how much time is spent on the panoramic views of the Duomo from the museum's windows and terrace-level walkway.
When to go
Piazza del Duomo is one of the busiest spots in Milan at almost any hour, so the square itself will be crowded regardless of when you visit. Inside the museum, mornings on weekdays tend to be calmer than afternoons and weekends. If the Duomo views are a priority, clear weather makes a noticeable difference to what you can see from the windows.
Combine it with
- Milan Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo (both about 0.1km) are effectively next door, making this a natural pairing before or after the museum.
- Santa Maria presso San Satiro (0.2km) is a short walk away and worth adding if you're already exploring the streets around the Duomo.
