Olona

Olona

The Olona is an Italian river belonging to the Po Basin, 71 kilometres (44 mi) long, that runs through the Province of Varese and Metropolitan City of Milan whose course is developed entirely in Lombardy.

The Olona River

The Olona is a river that flows from the Province of Varese down into the Metropolitan City of Milan, running entirely within Lombardy before reaching the Po Basin. Within the city, it's less a scenic destination than a waterway that has shaped Milan's urban and industrial geography — visitors typically encounter it while exploring nearby districts or following green corridors rather than visiting it as a standalone sight. Its interest lies more in what it reveals about the region's landscape and history than in dramatic scenery.

Getting there

Depending on which stretch you want to see, you'll reach the Olona by public transport or on foot from central Milan, generally within 20-30 minutes. There isn't a single defined "entrance," so it's worth deciding in advance which section of the river or which park along its course you intend to visit.

How much time to allow

An hour or two is usually enough for a walk along a stretch of the river or through an adjoining park. This isn't a full-day outing unless you plan to combine it with a longer walk or cycling route.

When to go

Mornings or late afternoons are more pleasant for walking, especially in warmer months. It doesn't draw large crowds the way central landmarks do, so timing is mostly a matter of comfort rather than avoiding busy periods.

Combine it with

  • Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio (2.1km) — one of Milan's older churches, with notable chapels
  • Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio (2.2km) — a historic basilica linked to the city's patron saint
  • Santa Maria delle Grazie (2.3km) — home to Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper
  • Basilica of San Lorenzo (2.3km) — known for its ancient Roman columns

These sites cluster within a couple of kilometres of each other, making it easy to pair a walk near the Olona with a route through Milan's historic churches on the same day.
