中城城
Nakagusuku Castle
中城城（なかぐすくじょう）は、沖縄県中頭郡北中城村・中城村に存在した日本の城。15世紀の琉球王国・尚泰久王代、護佐丸のグスク（城）として知られる。ユネスコ世界遺産。
What it is
Nakagusuku Castle is a Ryukyuan gusuku, a fortress built from stacked limestone walls without mortar, spread across a hilltop site divided into six courtyards. It's generally regarded as the best-preserved of Okinawa's gusuku ruins, so the curved stone walls and gate structures are largely intact rather than reconstructed, giving a clearer sense of the original layout than most other castle sites on the island. It's part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Getting there
The castle is in Kitanakagusuku village, inland from central Okinawa. It's not directly served by monorail, so the practical options are renting a car or taking a taxi; driving from central Naha takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. If arriving via Naha Airport (OKA), plan for a similar drive time plus time to pick up a rental car.
Time to allow
Walking the courtyards and walls at a relaxed pace, including stops for views over the surrounding coast, takes about an hour to ninety minutes.
When to go
Mornings are cooler for walking the exposed stone paths, which have little shade. Summer midday heat and humidity can make the uphill sections tiring, so bring water. The site doesn't draw the dense crowds of Shuri Castle, so it's usually possible to explore the walls without much congestion.
Combine it with
The Sakima Art Museum is about 2.7km away and can be paired with a castle visit in the same outing. The Ireibaru Site (6.2km) is a further option if extending the day, and both the wider Ryukyu Islands and Okinawa Islands areas sit around 7.5km out for those exploring more of the region.
