Ryukyu Islands
南西諸島（なんせいしょとう）は、九州島南方から台湾北東にかけて、約1200キロメートルにわたり点在する島嶼群である。
What it is
The Ryukyu Islands are the long chain of islands running southwest from Kyushu toward Taiwan, split between Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures. Okinawa Island, the largest in the chain, is where most visitors base themselves. The larger islands are volcanic in origin, while many of the smaller ones are coral, which gives the region its reef systems and pale, sandy coastlines. Travellers come here for the mix of beaches, diving and snorkelling around the reefs, and a culture distinct from mainland Japan, shaped by the islands' history as the independent Ryukyu Kingdom.
Getting there
Most trips start at Naha Airport (OKA) on Okinawa Island, which has direct flights from major Japanese cities. From central Naha, sights along the island's central-west coast, including this stretch of coastline, are typically a 30-60 minute drive or bus ride, depending on traffic. Reaching the outer islands of the chain requires an additional domestic flight or ferry from Naha or Kagoshima.
How much time to allow
A half day covers a single beach or coastal area on Okinawa Island. If you're island-hopping to see more of the Ryukyu chain, plan on at least two to three days per additional island, since ferry and flight schedules limit how much you can pack into a single day.
When to go
Summer (June to August) brings the warmest water for swimming and diving but also heat, humidity, and the risk of typhoons, which can disrupt ferries and flights between islands. Late spring and autumn offer milder weather with fewer crowds. Coastal spots near Naha get busiest on weekends and during Japanese holiday periods, so a weekday visit is easier for parking and beach space.
