生國魂神社
Ikukunitama Shrine
生國魂神社 は、大阪府大阪市天王寺区生玉町にある神社。式内社（名神大社）で、旧社格は官幣大社。現在は神社本庁の別表神社。「いくたまさん」と呼ばれる。
What it is
Ikukunitama Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Tennōji-ku, one of the older shrines in the Osaka area and formerly ranked among the highest tier of state-supported shrines under the pre-war shrine system. It's a quiet, unhurried spot with shrine buildings and grounds typical of an established urban Shinto site — worth a stop if you want to see a working shrine away from the main tourist crush rather than a monument built for visitors. Its main annual festival falls on September 9, which is the one time the grounds are livelier than usual.
Getting there
The shrine sits in central Osaka, an easy trip from Namba or the Dōtonbori area — figure on 15-20 minutes by train and on foot from either. It's within walking distance of Nipponbashi station as well, so it can be reached without a taxi or bus.
How long to spend
Most visitors need 20-30 minutes to walk the grounds and see the main hall, unless you time it with the September festival, in which case allow longer.
When to go
Outside of the September 9 festival, the shrine tends to be calm, so there's no particular time slot to avoid. Mornings are generally quieter and pleasant for a short visit. If you're specifically after festival atmosphere, plan around September 9; otherwise any weekday is fine for a peaceful look around.
