新世界
Shinsekai
新世界 は、大阪府大阪市浪速区恵美須東に位置する繁華街。中央やや北寄りに通天閣が建ち、南東部にジャンジャン横丁がある。
What it is
Shinsekai is an old entertainment district built in 1912, when it was laid out with New York as the model for its southern half and Paris for the northern half. The plan didn't fully survive the decades that followed, and today the area is known instead for its retro, slightly worn streetscape, cheap eateries serving kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), and old-school game arcades and pachinko parlors. Tsutenkaku Tower, a rebuilt version of the original landmark, still anchors the neighbourhood visually. It's a place to walk around, eat, and take in a version of Osaka that feels distinctly different from the glossier shopping districts elsewhere in the city.
Getting there
Shinsekai sits just south of central Osaka. From the Minami (Namba/Shinsaibashi) area, it's roughly a 10-15 minute train ride to Dobutsuen-mae or Shin-Imamiya stations, followed by a short walk. From Umeda in the north, allow around 20-25 minutes by subway or JR. Coming from Kansai International Airport, take the JR Haruka or Nankai line toward central Osaka and change to reach the area; total travel time is typically around an hour.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is enough to walk the main streets, see the tower from outside, and stop for food. Add more time if you plan to sit down for a proper kushikatsu meal or browse the arcades.
When to go
Evenings are when the neon signage and retro atmosphere stand out most, and many of the food stalls and restaurants are geared toward dinner. The main streets can get busy with tourists, particularly on weekends.
What to combine it with
Tsūtenkaku tower is right in the neighbourhood, making it a natural first stop. Tennōji Zoo is about 0.2km away and Tennōji Park roughly 0.4km, both easy additions if you want a break from the streets. The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, about 0.5km off, works well if you're interested in art and don't mind a short extra walk.
