天王寺動物園
Tennōji Zoo
天王寺動物園（てんのうじどうぶつえん）は、大阪府大阪市天王寺区の天王寺公園内にある動物園。1915年（大正4年）1月1日に開園した、日本で3番目に長い歴史をもつ動物園。面積約11ヘクタールの園内に、約200種1000匹の動物が飼育されている都市型総合動物園。
What it is
Tennōji Zoo is a city-run zoo covering about 11 hectares inside Tennōji Park, established in 1915 as the third zoo built in Japan. It houses a broad range of animals across enclosures laid out through the park's greenery, and works as a straightforward half-day outing for families or anyone wanting a break from the surrounding urban sightseeing. It sits just southwest of Shitennō-ji, one of the country's oldest Buddhist temples, so the setting mixes parkland with easy access to older Osaka landmarks.
Getting there
The zoo is in central Osaka, within Tennōji Park, close to Tennōji and Shin-Imamiya stations, both served by JR, subway, and private rail lines. From most points in central Osaka (Umeda, Namba), expect roughly 15-25 minutes by train, plus a short walk from the station into the park. From Kansai International Airport (KIX), it's about an hour by train via the JR or Nankai lines to Tennōji.
How long to spend
Two to three hours is enough to walk through the main enclosures at a relaxed pace. Add extra time if travelling with young children who want to linger at specific animal areas.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and school holidays, when the zoo draws large family crowds. Summer afternoons in Osaka can be hot and humid with limited shade in parts of the park, so a morning or early afternoon visit is more comfortable. Rainy days will also thin the crowds if you don't mind covered walking.
What to combine it with
The zoo's location makes it easy to pair with several nearby spots without much extra travel. Tennōji Park itself surrounds the zoo (0.3km), making a natural before-or-after stroll. The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts is a short walk away (0.4km) for an indoor contrast. Just outside the park, Shinsekai (0.2km) and its retro entertainment streets, along with the Tsūtenkaku tower (0.2km), are close enough to fold into the same afternoon.
