Circus Maximus
키르쿠스 막시무스(Circus Maximus)는 고대 로마 제국에서 가장 큰 전차 경기장이자 대중 오락 시설이었다. 로마의 팔라티노 언덕과 아벤티노 언덕 사이의 계곡 사이에 위치하고 있었다. 그 길이는 621m였으며 너비는 118m였고, 약 15만 명의 군중들을 수용할 수 있었다. 키르쿠스 막시무스는 로마 제국 전역에 지어진 전차 경기장들의 원조격이었다. 현재는 터만 남아 공원으로 쓰이고 있다.
What it is
The Circus Maximus was ancient Rome's chariot-racing stadium, built in the long valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills. What you see today is essentially an open grassy expanse tracing the original track's outline, with a few excavated fragments and information panels at the eastern end. There's no standing structure to speak of, so go for the scale and the site's history rather than expecting ruins like the Colosseum. It works well as a place to walk, get a sense of the layout, and look up at the Palatine Hill's imperial palace ruins rising above one side.
Getting there
It sits right below the Palatine Hill, a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes from the Colosseum or Roman Forum. From central Rome (e.g. Piazza Venezia), it's about a 10-15 minute walk. The Circo Massimo metro stop (Line B) lets out almost directly at the site.
Time to allow
Most people spend 20-30 minutes walking the perimeter or cutting across the field. It's a stop to fold into a longer day around the Palatine and Forum rather than a standalone destination.
When to go
There's no ticket or gate, so it's open-air and accessible any time. Morning or late afternoon avoids the strongest sun, since there's little shade across the open field. It's rarely crowded in the way the Forum or Colosseum can be, though it fills up during concerts or public events occasionally held there.
Combine with
- Palatine Hill (0.3km) — the imperial palace ruins overlooking the Circus, a natural next stop
- Cloaca Maxima (0.6km) — ancient Rome's main sewer outlet, a short walk away
- Arch of Titus and Arch of Constantine (both 0.6km) — combine easily with a visit to the Forum and Colosseum
