Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
エスプラネード・シアターズ・オン・ザ・ベイ は2002年10月16日にオープンした、シンガポールにある総合芸術文化施設である。
What it is
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's main performing arts venue, sitting where the Singapore River meets Marina Bay. The building is really two large domed halls under a spiky aluminium sunshade structure that gave it the local nickname "The Durian" — one dome holds a concert hall seating around 1,600, the other a theatre for about 2,000. Beyond ticketed shows (orchestra, opera, theatre, touring productions), there's a waterfront promenade, an outdoor stage that hosts free performances, and a mall-level shopping and dining area at the base. Many visitors come just to walk the bay-front boardwalk and see the building itself rather than attend a performance.
Getting there
It's in the Downtown Core, an easy walk from the Civic District and Marina Bay areas. From Raffles Place or the Marina Bay Sands area, walking along the waterfront takes roughly 15-20 minutes. The nearest MRT station is Esplanade (Circle Line), a short walk of a few minutes from the exit; City Hall and Raffles Place stations are also within a 10-15 minute walk.
How much time to allow
Allow 20-30 minutes to walk through the public areas and along the waterfront promenade. If attending a performance, plan for the show's running time plus 30 minutes beforehand to find your seats and look around.
When to go
Early evening is a good time to arrive, since the waterfront view of the Marina Bay skyline is best around sunset and into the night when buildings light up. The outdoor plaza and promenade can get busy on weekend evenings and during free outdoor performances. Daytime visits are quieter but hotter, with less shade along the open promenade.
Combine it with
- Merlion Park (0.3km) — a short walk along the bay, often paired with Esplanade for skyline photos.
- Singapore River (0.2km) — walk along the river mouth toward Boat Quay or Clarke Quay.
- National Gallery Singapore (0.4km) — housed in the former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings, a good indoor stop if the weather turns.
- St Andrew's Cathedral (0.4km) — a colonial-era landmark on the way to or from the Civic District.
