Roppongi
Roppongi is a central Tokyo district built around the Roppongi Hills complex, mixing shopping, offices, apartments, and art spaces with one of the city's densest concentrations of bars and clubs. During the day it draws visitors for its galleries and architecture; after dark it's known for a nightlife scene that stays busy well past midnight, with a mix of local crowds and foreign residents and tourists.
Getting there
Roppongi Station is served by the Tokyo Metro Hibiya and Oedo lines, making it a fairly direct ride from central hubs like Ginza or Shinjuku, typically around 15-20 minutes by subway.
How much time to allow
A couple of hours covers a walk through Roppongi Hills and a look at the surrounding streets. If you're adding a museum visit or planning to stay for the evening scene, allow half a day or more.
When to go
Daytime is quieter and better for shopping or gallery visits. In the evening, especially on weekends, the streets around the nightlife district get crowded and loud, which is part of the draw for some travellers and worth avoiding for others.
Combine it with
- Midtown Tower (0.4km) - another shopping and dining complex, an easy walk from Roppongi Hills.
- National Art Center, Tokyo (0.5km) - within walking distance for an art stop.
- Akasaka (1km) - a short trip away, useful for extending a walk into a quieter business and dining district.
- Tokyo Tower (1.4km) - close enough to combine as a half-day loop, particularly for skyline views in the late afternoon or evening.
