St. Mary's Cathedral
カトリック関口教会（かとりっくせきぐちきょうかい）は、東京都文京区関口にあるキリスト教（カトリック）の教会。カトリック東京大司教区の司教座聖堂（カテドラル）であり、教会堂名（聖堂名）が「無原罪の聖母」（聖母マリア）であることから、東京カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂（とうきょうカテドラルせいマリアだいせいどう）として知られている。
What it is
St. Mary's Cathedral is the main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tokyo, located in the Sekiguchi area of Bunkyo ward. The current building, designed by Kenzo Tange, is known for its stainless-steel exterior and dramatic hyperbolic-paraboloid roof, which forms a cross shape when viewed from above. It's a destination for visitors interested in modern architecture as much as for religious purposes, and the interior sanctuary is a striking, minimalist space of concrete and light.
Getting there
From central Tokyo, the cathedral is reached via the Yurakucho or Namboku subway lines to Edogawabashi Station, followed by a short walk of about 10 minutes uphill. Depending on your starting point, the trip typically takes 20-30 minutes by train plus the walk.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes here, enough to walk around the exterior, step inside the sanctuary, and take in the architecture from a few angles. There isn't a large complex of buildings to explore, so it's a relatively quick stop compared to larger temple or shrine grounds.
When to go
The cathedral is a working church, so it can be busier on Sunday mornings due to services. Outside of service times, it tends to be quiet, and weekday visits generally offer the most uninterrupted access to the interior. As with many concrete structures, the building's lines and shadows can look particularly striking in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon.

The cathedral sits in a residential part of Bunkyo, away from Tokyo's major sightseeing clusters, so nearby options require a bit of travel. Sunshine 60 in Ikebukuro is the closest listed attraction at around 1.9km. Jinbōchō, known for its secondhand bookshops, is about 3.4km away, while Shinjuku Gyoen (3.3km) and the Kabukichō entertainment district (3km) can also be worked into the same day with a short train or taxi ride.
