The Basilica di San Pietro di Castello, commonly called San Pietro di Castello, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica of the Patriarch of Venice located in the Castello sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. San Pietro di Castello
This former cathedral of Venice sits on its own small island at the eastern edge of Castello, connected to the rest of the city by a footbridge. It served as the city's cathedral church from 1451 to 1807, even though the seat of power and pageantry remained at San Marco — which is part of why it feels so removed from the tourist circuit today. Inside, look for the marble "throne of St. Peter," said to incorporate an Islamic funerary stele, and the leaning brick campanile out front, one of Venice's oldest bell towers.
Getting there
From central Venice (San Marco), it's roughly a 20-25 minute walk through Castello, or a vaporetto ride to the Giardini or Celestia stop followed by a short walk. There's no direct water route right to the island itself; you approach on foot across the bridge.
Time to allow
Thirty to forty-five minutes covers the interior and the surrounding grassy square, unless you want to linger over the artwork inside.
When to go
Because it's off the main sightseeing route, San Pietro di Castello rarely feels crowded, even in high season. Mornings tend to have the best natural light for the interior.

- San Francesco della Vigna (1km) — another Castello church worth pairing on the same walk.
- San Zaccaria (1.3km) — a convenient stop on the way back toward San Marco.
