San Giorgio Maggiore is a small island facing the Bacino di San Marco, separated from the main cluster of Venice by open water. It sits across the basin from the Doge's Palace, giving it a view back toward the city that few other spots offer — the Palladian church that dominates the island has been painted repeatedly, including by Monet, largely because of this angle. Most visitors come to see the church itself and to look back at Venice from the water rather than to explore the island in depth.
Getting there
The island isn't connected by bridge, so it has to be reached by water. Vaporetto line 2 runs from near San Marco / San Zaccaria and takes only a few minutes to cross the basin. It's a short, simple ride rather than a real journey.
Time to allow
An hour is usually enough to see the church, and if the bell tower is accessible, the view from the top. There isn't much else on the island to fill additional time.
When to go
Crowds build around midday as day-trip groups from San Marco arrive by boat; early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter. The view across to Venice is best in clear light, so an overcast day will make photos from the tower less rewarding.
Combine with
The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore (0.2km) is effectively the island itself, so it's covered in the same visit. Back across the water, the Doge's Palace (0.7km), Bridge of Sighs (0.7km), and San Zaccaria (0.8km) are all close together and make a natural continuation once you return by vaporetto.
