サンタ・マリア・デッラ・サルーテ聖堂
Santa Maria della Salute
What it is
Santa Maria della Salute is a large Baroque basilica standing at the point where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal, in the Dorsoduro district. It was built as a votive church, and its domed silhouette is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Venice's skyline, especially when viewed from across the water near Piazza San Marco. Inside, travellers come for the octagonal layout, the domed interior, and the artworks housed in the sacristy, including paintings by Titian and Tintoretto.
Getting there
From central Venice, the easiest approach is on foot if you're already in Dorsoduro or San Marco, since the church sits close to the Punta della Dogana. From Piazza San Marco, you can walk around via the Accademia bridge in roughly 20-25 minutes, or take the traghetto (small gondola ferry) across the Grand Canal for a much shorter crossing. A vaporetto (water bus) stop named Salute is also right in front of the church, reachable in a few minutes from San Marco.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes here, enough time to walk the interior, see the main altar, and look into the sacristy. If you also want to sit and take in the view of the Grand Canal from the steps outside, allow a little longer.
When to go
The church and its surrounding waterfront can get busy around midday, particularly with tour groups arriving by boat. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, and the light on the white stone facade is especially good near sunset when viewed from across the water.
What to combine it with
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is just 0.3km away, making it a natural pairing for an art-focused morning or afternoon. Piazza San Marco (0.5km), Museo Correr (0.4km), and Teatro La Fenice (0.4km) are all within easy walking distance on the other side of the Grand Canal, so this area works well as a single extended walking loop rather than separate trips.
