サン・マルコ広場
Piazza San Marco
サン・マルコ広場 は、ヴェネツィアの中心的な広場で、回廊のある建物に囲まれ、ドゥカーレ宮殿やサン・マルコ寺院などがある。ヴェネツィアの広場は方言でカンポ（campo）と呼ばれるが、サン・マルコ広場は別格であり、ピアッツァ（piazza）と呼ばれる。世界で最も美しい広場とも言われており、観光名所のほか、海からの玄関口でもある。
What it is
Piazza San Marco is Venice's main public square, framed by arcaded buildings, the Basilica, and the Campanile. Despite the "공원·정원" (park/garden) label, it's a paved civic square rather than green space — the appeal is the architecture and atmosphere, not lawns or trees. It has functioned for centuries as the city's religious and political centre, and it's still where locals and visitors gather, sit at the arcade cafés, or simply walk through on the way to the Basilica or the waterfront.
Getting there
From most points in central Venice, the square is reachable on foot in 15–20 minutes, since there are no cars or bikes anywhere in the historic centre. Vaporetto (water bus) lines stop at San Marco or San Zaccaria, a short walk away. If arriving from Marco Polo Airport (VCE), the most common routes are the Alilaguna water bus or a water taxi, both landing near San Marco after roughly an hour, depending on stops.
Time to allow
Allow at least 30–45 minutes to walk the square and Piazzetta and take in the surrounding facades. If you plan to also queue for the Basilica or climb the Campanile, budget an extra hour or two.
When to go
The square is crowded through most of the day in high season, especially late morning to mid-afternoon when tour groups pass through. Early morning or evening is quieter and lets you see the arcades and lighting without the density of visitors. In autumn and winter, parts of the square can experience acqua alta (high water flooding), so check conditions if visiting outside summer.
Combine it with
Everything worth pairing with the square is within a couple of minutes' walk: St Mark's Basilica, St Mark's Campanile, and St Mark's Clocktower are all about 0.1km away, right on or facing the square itself, and the Museo Correr, also 0.1km away, occupies part of the arcaded buildings along the piazza. A single visit can easily take in all four without any real travel between them.
