St Mark's Clocktower
시계탑(時計塔, 이탈리아어: Torre dell'orologio 토레 델로롤로조[*])은 이탈리아 북동부 베네치아 산마르코 광장 북쪽에 있는 시계탑이다.
What it is
St Mark's Clocktower stands on the north side of Piazza San Marco, marking the entrance to the Merceria, the street that historically linked the square to the Rialto. Built in the last decade of the 15th century, it pairs a central tower holding the astronomical clock with two lower wings. The clock face shows the hour, moon phase, and zodiac sign, and above it two bronze figures known as the Mori strike the hour bell. It was positioned deliberately so the clock could be seen from the lagoon, signalling Venice's wealth to arriving ships. Visits typically include a guided climb through the tower to see the clock mechanism and bell up close, along with views over the square.
Getting there
The tower sits directly on Piazza San Marco, so if you're anywhere in central Venice you'll likely arrive on foot. From the Rialto Bridge it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk through the Merceria shopping streets. By vaporetto, the San Marco or San Zaccaria stops are a few minutes' walk away.
Time to allow
A guided tour of the clock mechanism generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour, since access is limited to small groups on a fixed route through the tower.
When to go
Piazza San Marco is one of the busiest spots in Venice throughout the day, especially when cruise ships are in port, so early morning tends to be calmer. Because tower visits run in small guided groups, spaces can fill up, so it's worth planning ahead rather than arriving on a whim.
Combine it with
The tower is a few steps from St Mark's Basilica, St Mark's Campanile, and the piazza itself (all around 0.1km away), making it easy to see all three in one stop. The Museo Correr, about 0.2km away on the opposite side of the square, is a natural add-on if you have more time.
