Doge's Palace
ドゥカーレ宮殿 は、イタリア語で、総督や○○公の宮殿のこと。英語からの訳で「ドージェ宮」と呼ばれることもある。
What it is
The Doge's Palace was the seat of government for the Republic of Venice, combining the residence of the Doge with council chambers, courtrooms, administrative offices and a prison. The current Gothic building dates mainly from the 14th century, with later additions. Visitors go for the state rooms with their scale and decoration, including works by Venetian painters such as Tintoretto and Veronese, and for the Bridge of Sighs passage linking the palace to the old prisons. It has operated as a museum since 1923.
Getting there
The palace sits on Piazza San Marco, the historic and tourist centre of Venice. Most visitors arrive on foot or by vaporetto (water bus) to the San Marco or San Zaccaria stops, both a short walk away. From the Rialto Bridge area, expect roughly 15-20 minutes on foot through narrow streets, or a similar time by vaporetto along the Grand Canal.
Time to allow
Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours to see the main halls and courtyard without rushing. Add extra time if you want to follow the "Secret Itineraries" route into the smaller offices and prison areas, where offered.
When to go
This is one of the busiest sites in Venice, and queues build quickly through the late morning and early afternoon, especially in high season (spring through early autumn) and around major holidays. Arriving close to opening time generally means shorter lines. Cruise ship days can make the piazza noticeably more crowded.
Combine it with
- St Mark's Basilica and St Mark's Campanile (0.1km) — both sit right on the same square.
- Bridge of Sighs (0.1km) — visible from outside the palace and crossed as part of the interior route.
- St Mark's Clocktower (0.2km) — a short walk across the piazza.
Given the distances, all of these can reasonably be covered in a single visit to the square.
