How to plan your first trip to Abu Dhabi

Understanding the City Layout
Abu Dhabi is divided between the mainland and several islands. For first-timers, it is easiest to think of the city in three main zones:
- The Main Island: The central hub containing the government district, the Corniche waterfront, and the primary shopping areas.
- Saadiyat Island: The cultural district, home to major museums and galleries.
- Yas Island: The entertainment zone, featuring theme parks and the Formula 1 circuit.
Arrival and Getting Around
Most visitors arrive via Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). To reach the city center, the most efficient options are airport taxis or ride-sharing apps. Public buses operate but are less frequent for airport transfers.
Once inside the city, taxis are the most practical way to navigate between islands due to the distances and the heat. While a public bus network exists, the city is designed for vehicles, and walking is only recommended for short distances within specific districts like the Corniche.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Underestimating Distances: Many visitors assume they can walk between major landmarks. The distance between the Grand Mosque and Yas Island is significant; always use a vehicle.
- Dress Code Oversight: While the city is cosmopolitan, modest dress is required at religious sites. Carry a shawl or wear long sleeves and trousers to avoid being denied entry to the Grand Mosque.
- Ignoring the Heat: During summer months, outdoor activity is nearly impossible during midday. Plan outdoor visits for early morning or late evening.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize these experiences in order:
- Essential: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. These are the city's primary architectural and cultural landmarks.
- Recommended: A stroll along the Corniche and a visit to Qasr Al Watan (the Presidential Palace).
- Optional: Yas Island theme parks or mangrove kayaking. These can wait if you have a limited schedule, as they are leisure-focused rather than cultural.
