Antirhodos

Antirhodos is a submerged site in the eastern harbor of Alexandria. Once an island housing a palace of the Ptolemaic dynasty, it sank following a series of earthquakes and tsunamis. Today, the site consists of underwater ruins, including columns and architectural fragments, which are visible to divers and snorkelers beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea.

Getting There

The site is located in the eastern harbor area. From the city centre, it is accessible via a short taxi or ride-share trip. Depending on traffic, the journey typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Time Requirement

The amount of time spent here depends on the activity. A brief snorkeling session may take 1 to 2 hours, while a full diving excursion usually requires a half-day to allow for equipment preparation and decompression.

When to Visit

Visibility for underwater viewing is best during the summer months when the sea is calmer. It is advisable to visit in the morning to avoid the strongest midday sun and peak harbor activity. The site can become crowded during local holiday periods.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, this site can be combined with other historical and cultural landmarks in Alexandria:

  • Mahatet El Raml (0.6km)
  • Azarita (0.6km)
  • Caesareum of Alexandria (0.6km)
