Church of St Nicholas

Overview

The Church of St Nicholas is a Roman Catholic church in Amsterdam's old town, dedicated to the city's patron saint. Travelers visit to view its 19th-century architecture, twin towers, central dome, and decorated interior, as well as its historic place in the capital.

Getting There

The church stands directly opposite Amsterdam Central Station. From Dam Square in the city center, it is a 5 to 10-minute walk north along Damrak. Any tram or metro line heading to Central Station drops passengers within a 2-minute walk.

Visiting Time

Set aside 20 to 45 minutes to view the main nave, side chapels, and dome.

When to Visit

Mornings offer a quieter atmosphere before crowds build around the central station area. Afternoons and summer weekends are the busiest times. Because this is an active place of worship, sightseeing is paused during religious services.
