Seasonal Weather and Conditions
Angkor experiences a tropical climate divided into two primary seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry Season (November to April)
This is the peak travel period. From November to February, the weather is cooler and drier, making it the most comfortable time for walking through the temple complexes. From March to May, temperatures rise significantly, often becoming intensely hot and humid. Daylight is consistent, but the heat can be draining during midday hours.
Rainy Season (May to October)
The monsoon season brings frequent, heavy rainfall, typically in short bursts. While the humidity is high, the rain cools the air and transforms the landscape. The moats and surrounding jungles become lush and vibrant green, providing a stark contrast to the grey stone of the temples. Crowds are significantly thinner during these months.
Choosing Your Travel Window
- For Comfort and Sightseeing: November to February is ideal. The mild weather allows for full-day explorations without extreme heat exhaustion.
- For Photography and Quiet: June to September is best. The greenery is at its peak, and the lack of crowds allows for more intimate experiences at sites like Bayon or Ta Prohm.
- Periods to Consider: April is the hottest month and coincides with the Khmer New Year, which can lead to increased local crowds and limited availability of certain services.
Practical Preparations
Regardless of the season, visitors arrive via Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI). Local transport to the temples is primarily via remorks (tuk-tuks) or private cars.
Packing Essentials
- Dry Season: Lightweight, breathable clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Rainy Season: A sturdy umbrella, waterproof footwear, and dry bags for electronics.
- General: Modest attire is mandatory for temple entry; shoulders and knees must be covered. A light scarf or sarong is recommended for all visitors.
