Overview

Angkor Thom is a fortified complex that served as the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Established in the late 12th century under King Jayavarman VII, the site features extensive stone walls, monumental entry gates flanked by giant carved figures, and preserved historical ruins. Travelers visit to study the layout of an ancient capital and explore classical Khmer architecture across the enclosed city.

Getting There

The site sits north of downtown Siem Reap. Most travelers reach it by tuk-tuk, taxi, or arranged vehicle. The drive from the city center typically takes 20 to 30 minutes under normal road conditions.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 2 and 4 hours on-site. The grounds cover a large area, and walking between the gates, causeways, and main structures requires a moderate amount of time.

When to Go

Arrive in the early morning to avoid peak heat and large tour groups. The dry season from November to April brings consistent weather but also the heaviest crowds. Midday visits can be challenging due to high temperatures and direct sun exposure on the stone paths.
