Rova of Antananarivo

The Rova of Antananarivo is a royal palace complex that served as the residence of Madagascar's monarchy from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Located on the highest hill in the city, the site provides a historical overview of the kingdom and a wide view of the surrounding urban landscape.

Getting There

The complex is located on a hill overlooking the city centre. Most visitors reach the site via taxi or hired car from the central districts. Depending on traffic conditions in Antananarivo, the drive from the city centre typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the palace grounds, view the architecture, and observe the city from the plateau.

Timing Your Visit

Visiting during the dry season (May to October) is generally preferred to avoid heavy rains. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds of the day.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central location on the hill, several other historical and religious sites are within walking distance:

  • Andafiavaratra Palace (0.3km)
  • Saint Laurent's Cathedral, Ambohimanoro (0.6km)
  • Immaculate Conception Cathedral (0.7km)
