Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Antananarivo
About the Cathedral
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the historic Andohalo neighborhood of Antananarivo. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Antananarivo, it stands as an active religious center on the city's upper ridge. Visitors come to view its architecture and take in wide views across the lower capital.
Getting There
From central areas such as Analakely, the site is reachable by taxi or on foot via steep stairways and uphill roads leading to Andohalo. A taxi ride usually takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, while walking up the hill takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
Time to Spend
Allow 30 to 45 minutes for a visit. This provides enough time to view the exterior, look inside the nave when accessible, and observe the surrounding city from the hilltop grounds.
When to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon provides good lighting for views across the city. Sunday mornings draw large crowds of local worshippers for Mass, so plan a weekday or weekend afternoon visit if you prefer a quiet setting. The dry season from May to October offers the best conditions for walking the steep neighborhood streets.
