Falemauga Caves

The Falemauga Caves are a system of lava tubes located in the Tuamasaga region of Upolu Island. These natural formations were created by volcanic activity and show evidence of prehistoric human habitation. Visitors go here to explore the underground tunnels and learn about the site's historical use as a refuge for local populations.

Getting There

The caves are located a short distance from the center of Apia. Depending on the mode of transport, the trip typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Most travelers use taxis or rental cars to reach the site.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the cave system and examine the geological features and historical traces.

When to Visit

It is advisable to visit during the daylight hours for visibility and safety inside the tubes. The caves provide a naturally cooler environment, making them a viable option during the hotter parts of the day. The site does not typically experience heavy crowds, though visiting during the dry season avoids slippery conditions.
