Lake Lanoto'o
Lake Lanoto'o
Located on Upolu Island, this is the largest volcanic crater lake in Samoa. It is situated within a national park and is designated as a wetland of international importance. Visitors go here to see a preserved natural ecosystem and the lake's volcanic origins.
Getting There
The lake is located just outside the main hub of Apia. From the city centre, it is a short drive of approximately 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Most travellers use taxis or rental cars to reach the site.
Duration of Visit
Allow between 1 and 2 hours to explore the immediate lakeside area and the surrounding national park trails. This provides enough time for a walk around the perimeter and observation of the local flora and fauna.
When to Visit
Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat and to observe wildlife when they are most active. The site generally remains quiet, though it can see more visitors during local holidays. Be mindful of the rainy season, which can make the surrounding park trails muddy.
Nearby Attractions
The lake can be combined with other local sites due to their proximity:
- Falemauga Caves: Located 0.9km away, making it an easy addition to the itinerary.
- Apia Samoa Temple: A 9.3km drive from the lake.
- Museum of Samoa: Situated 10.5km away, suitable for those spending a full day in the Apia area.
