Understanding the City Layout

Arnhem lies on the Nederrijn river against the Veluwe moraine, giving it noticeable elevation changes unusual for Dutch cities. Centrum forms the core between Arnhem Centraal station and the river, anchored by Eusebius Church. Just north of the railway tracks is Sonsbeek, a steep district of landscaped parks. To the east, Spijkerkwartier features nineteenth-century townhouses, while northeast lies Klarendal (Modekwartier), home to independent designer studios and cafes. Across the river to the south sits modern Arnhem-Zuid.

Arriving and Getting Around

Direct intercity trains run from Schiphol Airport straight to Arnhem Centraal. For local travel, Arnhem is the only city in the Netherlands operating a trolleybus network. These overhead-wire electric buses link the rail hub to surrounding districts. Passengers pay by tapping contactless payment cards at station gates and on buses. The central pedestrian core is compact enough to walk, while buses or bicycles handle outer reaches.

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

• Visiting only the bridge: The John Frost Bridge and its wartime history are significant, but stopping there misses the hills of Sonsbeek and the design quarter in Klarendal.
• Expecting flat ground: Northern Arnhem features rolling hills; wear supportive walking footwear.

A Sensible First-Visit Flow

Start in the Centrum and walk south to the John Frost Bridge and its riverside memorial center. Next, head north through town into Sonsbeek Park or wander through Klarendal. Major suburban sites—including the Netherlands Open Air Museum and Burgers' Zoo—are best saved for a second day.
