How to visit Arusha Tanzania for the first time

City Layout and Districts
Arusha is a highland city characterized by a mix of colonial architecture and modern commercial hubs. For a first-timer, think of the city in three main zones:
- The Central Business District (CBD): The dense core where most banks, markets, and government offices are located. It is walkable but congested.
- The Tourism Hub: Areas surrounding the city center where most safari operators and tour agencies are based.
- The Outskirts: Residential and coffee-growing areas that offer a quieter environment and views of Mount Meru.
Transportation
Arrival
Most visitors arrive via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). The airport is located a significant distance from Arusha city center. The most reliable way to reach the city is via a pre-arranged shuttle through your tour operator or a licensed airport taxi.
Getting Around
Within the city, the primary mode of transport is the bajaji (three-wheeled motorized rickshaw). They are efficient for short distances. For longer trips or trips outside the city center, licensed taxis are recommended.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Underestimating the Altitude: Arusha is situated in the highlands. Visitors often forget to hydrate properly, which can lead to fatigue before they even start a trek or safari.
- Over-scheduling the City: Many treat Arusha as a destination rather than a base. While there are local markets and coffee estates, the city's primary value is its proximity to national parks.
- Ignoring Local Customs: Entering shops or homes without a brief greeting is seen as impolite. A simple "Jambo" goes a long way.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
To make the most of your stay, prioritize your activities in this order:
- Priority 1: The Gateway Experience. Use Arusha as your logistics hub to organize trips to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Priority 2: Local Culture. Visit a local coffee plantation or the Arusha Central Market to experience the city's agricultural roots.
- Priority 3: Nature. If time permits, visit the Arusha National Park for a shorter, more accessible wildlife experience before heading to the larger reserves.
