Saluga and Ghazal Islands

Located on the Nile south of Aswan, these islands form a nature reserve established in 1986. The area is designated to protect endangered plant and animal species. Travelers visit this site for wildlife watching and to experience a quieter environment on the river downstream from the Aswan Dam.

Getting There

Access to the islands is by boat from the Aswan city center. The journey typically takes between 20 to 40 minutes depending on the boat speed and the specific boarding point along the Nile.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours to explore the islands and observe the local flora and fauna. The time spent depends on whether you choose a guided nature walk or a slower boat circuit around the perimeter.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to April to avoid the extreme heat of the Egyptian summer. Early morning or late afternoon is recommended for wildlife spotting. The site generally remains less crowded than the city's main archaeological landmarks.

Combining with Other Sites

Due to their location on the river, these islands can be combined with other nearby island and riverside attractions:

  • Kitchener's Island: 0 km
  • Elephantine Island: 0.5 km
  • Aswan Museum: 1 km
  • Temple of Khnum: 1 km
