Rangitoto Island

This volcanic island is located in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf and is the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic field. Visitors go here to hike the trail to the summit, which provides views of the city skyline and the surrounding gulf.

Getting There

Access to the island is by ferry from the Auckland city centre. The trip across the water typically takes around 25 to 30 minutes.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 3 to 5 hours for a visit. This provides enough time for the ferry transit and a round-trip walk to the summit and back.

When to Visit

The island is open to the public year-round. It can get crowded during weekends and school holidays. Because the terrain is volcanic and exposed, wearing sturdy footwear is recommended regardless of the season.

Nearby Attractions

Depending on your transport arrangements, you can combine a visit to the island with other coastal sites in the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland area:

  • Motukorea (5.7km)
  • Bean Rock Lighthouse (5.8km)
  • North Head (6.3km)
  • Takarunga / Mount Victoria (7km)
