The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) is a museum located in Ubud on Bali, Indonesia.
What it is
ARMA is a private museum and art complex in Ubud showing Balinese and Indonesian painting alongside works by foreign artists who lived on the island in the early 20th century, such as Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet. The collection traces how Balinese classical and modern painting developed, including pieces linked to the Pita Maha artists' movement. It's worth visiting for a look at Balinese art history rather than as a quick photo stop, since the galleries reward some unhurried viewing. The grounds also include gardens, a theater space sometimes used for dance performances, and workshop areas.
Getting there
ARMA is in the Peliatan area on the southern edge of Ubud. From central Ubud (near the Palace and market), it's a short drive or scooter ride, generally under 15 minutes depending on traffic, or a longer walk of around 30 minutes. Taxis, ride-hailing apps, and scooter rental are all common ways to get around Ubud. If arriving from 응우라라이 국제공항(DPS), expect roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car depending on traffic.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend around 1 to 2 hours walking through the galleries and gardens. Add extra time if a dance or cultural performance is scheduled during your visit.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking between the indoor galleries and outdoor garden areas. Ubud overall gets busy with tour groups around midday, so an earlier visit can mean more space to view the art at your own pace.
What to combine it with
ARMA sits close to several other Ubud sights, making it easy to combine into one outing. Ubud Monkey Forest and Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal are both about 0.4km away, so either works well as a next stop. Ubud Palace (1.3km) and Pura Taman Saraswati (1.4km) are a bit further but still walkable or a short ride, and pair naturally with a visit to central Ubud's market and shops.
