Overview
Great Salt Pond is a 180-hectare coastal saline wetland located on the southeastern peninsula of Saint Kitts. It is designated as an important bird habitat, attracting travellers primarily for birdwatching and observing resident and migratory bird species in their natural environment.
Getting There
The site is reached by driving south from central Basseterre along the main peninsula road. Travelling by car or taxi from the town centre generally takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Time to Allow
Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours in the area. This provides sufficient time to check multiple vantage points, set up binoculars or camera equipment, and observe bird life along the water.
When to Visit
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit, as bird activity is highest and the sun is less intense. The landscape is open and offers minimal shade, so midday visits can be uncomfortable. The area is rarely crowded, offering a quiet environment for wildlife observation.
