Overview

The Monument to the People's Heroes is a national memorial located in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Built between 1952 and 1958, the granite obelisk commemorates those who died in revolutionary struggles. Travellers visit to see its stone reliefs and historical inscriptions: the north face bears calligraphy by Mao Zedong, and the south face carries text by Zhou Enlai.

Getting There

Located in the city centre, the site is reachable by subway Line 1 (Tiananmen East or West) or Line 2 (Qianmen), taking roughly 15 to 30 minutes. Visitors must pass through security checkpoints before entering the square.

Time to Allow

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to view the structure and examine the bas-relief panels around its base.

When to Go

Go in early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat, as the open plaza offers no shade. The area gets heavily crowded, particularly on weekends and public holidays, leading to long waits at security checkpoints.
