Beijing is a vast metropolis where distances between historic sites are significant. Efficient travel requires a combination of rail and app-based road transport.

Primary Modes of Transport

• Subway: The most reliable way to avoid traffic. It is the best choice for reaching major hubs like the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace.
• Ride-Hailing (Didi): Essential for door-to-door travel and areas not served by rail. It wins for convenience and luggage transport.
• Buses: Useful for short hops or specific routes to the Great Wall sections, though slower due to congestion.

Tickets and Passes

The Beijing Municipal Public Transport Combination Card is a stored-value card used for both buses and the subway. It is ideal for long-term visitors. For short trips, mobile payment via Alipay or WeChat Pay is the standard, as they integrate transport QR codes. Physical tickets are available at stations but are less efficient for frequent transfers.

From Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) to City Center

• Airport Express: Fast and predictable. Low cost, low effort, but requires a transfer to the subway or a taxi to reach your final destination.
• Taxi/Ride-Hailing: Direct and high effort for the driver. Higher cost, but best for those with heavy luggage.
• Airport Bus: Moderate cost and time. Useful for specific districts but subject to road traffic.

Practical Travel Notes

• Last Services: Most subway lines stop operating around midnight.
