Great War Island

Overview

Great War Island is an uninhabited nature reserve at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers in Belgrade. Visitors come to walk unpaved paths, watch wildlife, and view unspoiled riverside greenery directly opposite the urban center.

Getting There

From central Belgrade, a city bus or taxi ride to Zemun Quay takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. In July and August, a pedestrian pontoon bridge links the Zemun bank to the northern tip. Outside summer, access is by local boat or kayak.

Time to Allow

Plan for 2 to 3 hours to walk the trails and explore the shoreline. Allow a half day if you plan to birdwatch or rest by the water.

When to Visit

Summer is the easiest time to visit due to bridge access. The northern Lido beach gets crowded on sunny weekends, but the interior paths remain uncrowded. Avoid visiting after heavy rains or during spring river surges when trails become waterlogged.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a trip with these nearby sites:

  • Malo Ratno Ostrvo (1.2km): A smaller protected islet downstream in the Danube.
  • Sava (1.3km): The river and its riverside promenade.
  • Pobednik (1.6km): The monument in Belgrade Fortress overlooking the confluence.
  • Ružica Church (1.6km): A historic church inside the fortress walls.
