Bergenhus Fortress

Located at the entrance to the harbor, this site is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved stone strongholds. Visitors go here to explore historical military architecture and view the city center and harbor from the fortress grounds.

Getting There

The fortress is situated adjacent to the city center. It is accessible via a short walk of approximately 5 to 10 minutes from the central harbor area.

Depending on whether you explore the outer grounds or enter the specific museum buildings, allow between 1 and 3 hours for a visit.

When to Visit

The site is open to the public throughout the year. To avoid the largest crowds, visit during weekday mornings. Like most major sites in Bergen, it becomes more crowded during the peak summer tourist season.
