Kumbheshwar Temple

What It Is

Kumbheshwar Temple is a 14th-century, five-story pagoda dedicated to Shiva. Visitors come to view its multi-tiered Newari architecture, intricate wood carvings, and the large stone Nandi statue positioned facing the main shrine. It remains an active place of daily worship surrounding a traditional courtyard.

Getting There

The complex is located just north of Patan Durbar Square. Walking from the central square takes about 5 to 10 minutes through local lanes. Taxis from central Kathmandu or nearby hubs can drop visitors at the edge of the pedestrian street leading to the courtyard.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes walking the perimeter, examining the wood carvings, and viewing the shrine.

When to Visit

Mornings offer cooler temperatures and a quiet atmosphere as locals carry out daily rituals. The temple courtyard gets crowded during major religious festivals and holiday periods when worshippers gather for ritual bathing.
