The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni is a prehistoric underground complex used as both a religious sanctuary and a burial ground. It contains the remains of up to 7,000 people and is the only prehistoric underground necropolis of its kind. Visitors go here to see the carved rock chambers and the ancient structural layout of the site.
Getting There
The site is located in Paola. From the center of Valletta, you can reach the attraction via local bus or taxi. The journey typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Visit Duration
Due to strict visitor limits to preserve the environment, tours are tightly controlled. You should allow approximately 1 to 2 hours for the guided experience once you arrive.
When to Visit
The site is underground and maintains a consistent temperature regardless of the season. However, it is highly crowded due to the very limited number of daily tickets available. Advance booking is necessary as walk-ins are generally not accommodated.
