The Cottonera Lines are a system of fortifications built between the 17th and 18th centuries to protect the cities of Bormla and Birgu. Visitors go here to walk along the old walls and examine the layout of Malta's historical military architecture.
Getting There
The fortifications are located outside the central hub of Birkirkara. From the city centre, you can reach the site via local bus or taxi. The journey typically takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Duration of Visit
Allow approximately 1.5 to 3 hours to walk the perimeter of the walls and observe the defensive structures.
When to Visit
The site is outdoors and exposed to the sun, so early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid midday heat. Spring and autumn offer the most temperate weather for walking. The area does not typically experience the same crowd levels as the main tourist hubs in Valletta.
