Getting Around Bissau

Bissau lacks a formal municipal transit system, relying on taxis and informal minibuses.

Taxis

Taxis are the most practical transport for visitors. They operate as shared rides along primary avenues or as private charters, known locally as a corrida. Private taxis are ideal for direct travel between Bissau Velho and outlying districts. Vehicles do not have meters, so negotiate and agree on the fare before getting in.

Toca-Tocas

These shared minibuses run set corridors between central plazas, the port, and commercial hubs like Bandim Market. They win on price for travelers without luggage, but they get packed and lack fixed timetables.

Fares and Ticketing

Transit passes and contactless cards do not exist in Bissau. Transport is strictly cash-in-hand per journey. Always carry small banknotes and coins in local currency, as drivers rarely carry change.

Osvaldo Vieira Airport (OXB) to the City

The airport sits northwest of the center along the main access road.

  • Private taxi: Quickest and easiest option. Taxis wait outside arrivals and represent a higher cost band. Agree on the fare before loading luggage.
  • Roadside toca-toca: Lowest cost band but high effort. You must carry bags out to the main road to flag a minibus into town.

Practical Advice

  • Rush hours: Heavy congestion forms around Mercado de Bandim and main roundabouts during weekday morning and late afternoon commutes.
  • Night travel: Toca-tocas stop running shortly after dark. Taxis run late, though fares rise at night.
  • Luggage and accessibility: Minibuses cannot accommodate large bags. Streets lack curb cuts and pavements are often unpaved or uneven, making step-free travel unfeasible.
