How to visit Brno for the first time: A practical orientation guide
August 29, 2026 · last updated · about 4 min read
City Layout and Districts
Brno is more compact than Prague, making it highly walkable. To orient yourself, divide the city into three main zones:
- The Historic Center: The pedestrian-heavy core containing the main squares and the cathedral. This is where most first-time sightseeing occurs.
- The Spilberk Area: Located on a hill overlooking the center, this area is dominated by the fortress and provides a vantage point of the city layout.
- The University Districts: Surrounding the center, these areas are characterized by a high student population, offering a more contemporary, lively atmosphere with numerous cafes.
Transport: Getting In and Around
From Vienna International Airport (VIE): As Brno does not have a major international airport, most visitors arrive via Vienna. The most efficient method is the RegioJet or FlixBus lines, which run directly from the airport to Brno's main bus station (Hlavní nádraží). Alternatively, trains run from Vienna Central Station (Wien Hbf) to Brno.
Inside the City: Brno has an integrated public transport system. Trams are the primary mode of transit and are generally faster than buses for crossing the city center. Tickets can be purchased via mobile apps or at automated kiosks.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Over-scheduling: Visitors often try to treat Brno as a checklist of monuments. Instead, spend time in the narrow alleys of the center to experience the Moravian lifestyle.
- Ignoring the South: Many stay strictly in the center. Venture slightly south to experience the local wine culture, as Brno is the gateway to the South Moravian wine region.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
Priority sights: Start with the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and the Old Town Hall. Visit the Villa Tugendhat for modernist architecture, but ensure you book tickets well in advance.
Secondary sights: The Spilberk Castle and the Ossuary of St. James are significant but can wait until the second day if you prefer a slower pace.
