Overview

The Ark of Bukhara is a massive citadel dating to the 5th century AD, reshaped under the Shaybanid dynasty in the 16th century. It served as a fortified town and the residence of Bukhara's rulers, housing palaces, courts, and administrative quarters. Travellers visit to see its high ramparts, walk through preserved royal courtyards, and view historical exhibits.

Getting There

The site sits on the western edge of the historic centre. Walking from central points like Lyabi-Hauz takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Taxis from anywhere in the city centre take under 10 minutes and stop directly in front of the main entrance ramp.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the courtyards and visit the museum rooms.

When to Visit

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) bring moderate weather suitable for walking the unshaded grounds. Summer days are intensely hot, so midday visits should be avoided. The fortress often gets crowded with tour groups by late morning, making early morning or late afternoon the best times for a quieter visit.
