Overview

The Kalyan Minaret is a 12th-century brick tower located in the Poi Kalyan complex in Bukhara. Originally functioning as a call-to-prayer tower and a desert guidepost for caravans, it is visited for its intricate bands of decorative masonry and its status as a surviving pre-Mongol structure in the region.

Getting There

Located in the pedestrian old town, the site is reached on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes from central hubs like Lyabi-Khauz. Vehicles cannot access the plaza, so taxis must drop passengers at the perimeter of the historic district.

Time to Allow

Set aside 20 to 40 minutes to view the tower and walk through the central square.

When to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon offer comfortable temperatures and clearer light on the brickwork. The paved open square has little shade and becomes very hot during midday in summer. The plaza frequently gets crowded with tour groups during midday hours in spring and autumn.
