What to Expect

Mount Stromlo is a 770-meter mountain located west of Canberra. Visitors go there to hike through the forest park at its base, walk through native woodland trails, or reach the summit area for stargazing.

Getting There

The mountain is located about 15 minutes west of Canberra's city centre by car. Driving via the Tuggeranong Parkway and Cotter Road is the most practical transit method, as direct public transport options to the trailheads are minimal.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 3 hours depending on your plans. A basic visit to the summit takes under an hour, whereas walking the forest tracks typically requires 2 to 3 hours.

When to Visit

Clear nights are optimal for stargazing. For walking and outdoor trails, early morning is advisable during warmer months to avoid heat. Weekends tend to be busier with local cyclists and runners, while weekdays are generally quiet.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a trip with these nearby destinations:

  • Mount Stromlo Observatory (1km)
  • National Zoo & Aquarium (5.1km)
  • Weston Park (7.5km)
  • Mount Taylor (8km)
