Mount Stromlo Observatory
About the Site
Mount Stromlo Observatory is an active astronomical research facility operated by the Australian National University, located west of Canberra. Visitors go to explore the grounds, view telescope ruins preserved after the 2003 bushfires, read heritage displays, and look out over the surrounding landscape.
Getting There
The facility is situated roughly 15 kilometres west of central Canberra. A personal car or rideshare is the primary way to reach the hilltop, taking about 20 minutes via Cotter Road. Direct public buses do not service the summit.
Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 2 hours on site. This is sufficient to walk the heritage trails, view the preserved dome structures, and read the informational signage.
When to Visit
Daylight hours on clear days offer the best viewing conditions. The hilltop is exposed, meaning visitors should expect strong winds in winter and high heat in summer. Crowds are generally light on weekdays and moderate on weekends.
